El ciervo volante (Lucanus cervus) es una especie de coleóptero escarabeiforme perteneciente a la familia Lucanidae. Se le considera el escarabajo más grande de Europa. Su tamaño total varía entre los 3 y 9 cm en los machos y los 2,8 y 5,4 cm en las hembras. Presentan un notable dimorfismo sexual; los machos son mayores que las hembras y poseen las mandíbulas mucho más desarrolladas que utilizan para la lucha; tienen una forma que recuerda los cuernos de un ciervo, de donde deriva su nombre común. Lucanus cervus is the best-known species of stag beetle in the West (family Lucanidae), and is sometimes referred to simply as the stag beetle. In the UK it is associated with urban gardens, but is more commonly found in forests in the rest of Europe. Forest management, in eliminating old trees and dead wood, eliminates at the same time the habitat and food of this species. Once quite common, the population of the Lucanus cervus, along with that of other species of beetles which feed on dead wood, is in decline, and is now listed as a globally threatened/declining species. El escarabajo hércules (Dynastes hercules) es un coleóptero escarabeido, uno de los escarabajos rinoceronte. Habita en los bosques tropicales, selvas africanas y bosques ecuatoriales de América Central y del Sur. Es uno de los coleópteros más grandes que existen, ya que los machos pueden alcanzar una longitud total de 17 centímetros, incluyendo su largo cuerno torácico. Los machos de la especie poseen dos cuernos, uno en el tórax y otro en la cabeza, que en ocasiones llegan a crecer más que el propio cuerpo del escarabajo. The Hercules beetle (Dynastes hercules) is the most famous and the largest of the rhinoceros beetles. It is native to the rainforests of Central America, South America, and the Lesser Antilles. The beetle has also been observed as far north as Southern Veracruz in Mexico. Their title is well deserved, with some able to lift more than 850 times (up to 8 kg lifted) their own weight and some males, rarely, reaching 17 cm (6.75 inches) in length. It is the largest of the six species in the Dynastes genus, and one of the largest beetles known, being exceeded in length by only two other beetles in the family Cerambycidae, Macrodontia cervicornis (specimens of 17–17.5 cm are known) and Titanus giganteus (also up to 17–17.5 cm; several 18+ cm specimens are reputed/alleged to exist).
